The Sega fans would talk about how Nintendo had "kiddie" games and censored blood. The Nintendo fans would scream about how the Genesis was a technologically inferior machine. It was all rather silly, to be honest, but continues to this day with the Xbox 360 and PS3 (both of which I own, because I'm Switzerland). Not everyone, however, was paying attention to the third contender. NEC released the PC Engine (called the TurboGrafx 16) in 1987 in Japan, then in 1989 in America. A slew of add-ons and variations followed, but the most important to yours truly was the TurboDuo.Some of the games released for this machine were incredible. Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo, for example, is arguably the most amazing Castlevania game to date, and considered by many to be the most critical turning point in the series. Don't even get me started on the music. The Ys series also had quite a showing, with parts 1 - 4 showing up in some form (though not all in English). And, of course, there were the shmups. This was, perhaps, the most attractive part of the deal. Those addicted to Japanese shooter games had plenty to love about the Duo. Gate of Thunder, Cotton, Hellfire, Macross 2036 and more. I'm a junkie for the genre (we're big Treasure fans in this house), so this system is like smack to me. Few gaming experiences in this world are better than a beer and a good shooter. If you've never had a chance to play some of these titles, I would highly recommend it. The gear is available on eBay, and the experience can also be had via emulation, though it's not quite the same. A lot of younger gamers have never heard of NEC games, but even some older gamers are unaware of some of the better titles available. There was more to NEC than just Bonk, trust me.
